Each SMĪLE is crafted from recycled chopsticks by ChopValue Microfactories and recycled construction steel from our partners. Each chopstick undergoes a combination of heat, steam, and pressure to uniformly create a new engineered material. The SMĪLE ecosystem collects local waste products from restaurants and construction sites, processes and engineers them into timeless and durable decor items.

When we align the chopsticks through our shaker table, anything that doesn’t belong is removed by hand - we don’t use any chemicals or water to clean to avoid any further process of energy or waste streams. The next step is to press them into tiles, which are the working base of all our products. We coat the chopsticks in a water-based resin, which are then transferred into an oven for drying, and into our hydraulic press, both of which are at high temperatures. Imagine tons of pressure and high heat applied on the material over six hours - that sterilizes and removes any trails of contamination or bacteria in our newly formed tiles.

When the water-based resin-coated chopsticks are subjected to high temperature and heat from the production process, a strong cross-linking strengthens the bond between the densified chopsticks turned tiles with its new performance properties.

The resin is a water-based acrylic resin, free of urea and formaldehyde. It’s a non-toxic and environmentally-friendly alternative to the current resins used in the industry, allowing us to manufacture VOC-free products.

Our material is very similar to how you’d care for natural wood. Please keep SMĪLE in a consistent environment, away from sudden or extreme changes in room temperature. Regular cleaning is recommended, using a slightly damp cloth to wipe away any dirt and debris, then finish with a soft dry cloth. Use a conditioning treatment such as mineral oil once every 2 years to penetrate the fibers for hydration and protection. If there are fingerprints or mild oil stains, rub dry baking soda over the area and vacuum it off. If that doesn’t fully remove the mark, add a few drops of lemon juice to lukewarm water and wipe it off with a soft cloth. Repeat with the baking soda step afterward, and finish with a dry cloth wipe down.

The frames are sanded, polished, and coated with a non-toxic surface finish, which makes it durable for interior use only. Construction steel is in fact, not stainless and needs a surface coat to be protected from moisture. SMĪLE is not suitable for outdoor use and materials are designed to be 100% recyclable at the end of its lifetime.
